BTEC internal assessment
Draft-mark BTEC assignments against every criterion
Marking a BTEC assignment means checking each learner's work against every Pass, Merit and Distinction criterion in the brief, then writing feedback that points to the evidence. VocMark does the first draft of that.
It reads your unit specification and assignment brief, pulls out the criteria — A.P1, B.M2, AB.D1 and so on — then assesses each learner's work against them and shows you the evidence it found. You review it, change anything you disagree with, and make the decision.

How it works
- 1
Upload the specification and brief
Use the PDFs you already teach from. VocMark extracts every criterion with its full code and wording, and you can edit the list before marking.
- 2
Upload each learner's work
PDF or Word documents, one or more per learner — one per task is fine.
- 3
Review the draft
For each criterion you see met or not met, a confidence level, and the reasoning with the evidence it found. Change any decision in a click.
- 4
Share the next steps
Generate a one-page improvement plan for each learner, aimed at the target grade you set.
Built around how BTEC grading works
A learner gets a Merit only when every Pass and every Merit criterion is met, and a Distinction only when every Pass, Merit and Distinction criterion is met. VocMark applies that rule to the criterion decisions, so the overall grade always follows from the evidence — and changes as soon as you change a decision.
If a Pass criterion is missing, the work is shown as Unclassified rather than rounded up, so nothing reaches internal verification looking stronger than it is.
What it is — and isn't — for
- It is for BTEC units assessed against Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria — the internally assessed units in BTEC Nationals and many Level 1 and Level 2 BTECs.
- It isn't for units assessed by external exam, or by levels and mark bands.
- It drafts; you decide. The assessment decision, feedback to learners, internal verification and standards verification stay with you and your centre.
- It reads text. Scanned or photographed work, images and video can't be assessed — mark those criteria yourself, which you can do on the same screen.
Questions
Does VocMark give the final grade?
No. It gives you a draft decision for each criterion, with its reasoning, and calculates the overall grade from those decisions. You review, change and confirm them — the grade a learner receives is your decision.
Which documents do I need?
The unit specification and the assignment brief as text-based PDFs, and each learner's work as a PDF or Word document. VocMark doesn't supply Pearson's documents — you upload the ones you use.
Can I change the criteria it extracts?
Yes. You review the extracted criteria before anything is marked, and can edit, add or remove them at any time.
How much does it cost?
There is a free trial: 5 markings to use within 14 days, no card needed. After that, plans start at £19.99 a month for 100 markings, with unlimited assignments and students. No contract.
What happens to learners' work?
VocMark doesn't send learners' names or file names to the AI: each document goes to the model labelled only "Document 1", "Document 2" and so on (anything written inside the work itself is sent as part of it). You can read how data is handled on the Schools data & AI usage page, and a Data Processing Agreement is available for schools and colleges. Read it here.
Try it on work you've already marked
Upload one assignment and one learner's work, and see whether VocMark agrees with you. It takes about ten minutes.
